Katrina van Tassel Collage 2.0

Description

This is my second attempt at trying to capture the image of this extremely obscure Disney character.  My first is here: ladyaquanine73551.deviantart.c… I used Azalea's Heroine Fan-Art game www.azaleasdolls.com/dressupga… to make this, and a paint program for the collage.  My only real beef with this particular project was that she looks a little too sweet.  I somehow forgot to incorporate that sly smile of hers.  Many people would not remember Katrina unless you mentioned Disney's short cartoon of Sleepy Hollow and showed them pictures of her.  It's especially hard to remember a character who had no real lines in the story.  In fact, the only voice you hear in the cartoon is Bing Crosby.  However, what Katrina did in the story spoke volumes about her character.  She's not exactly someone little girls should aspire to.

Katrina van Tassel was the daughter of the wealthiest man in Sleepy Hollow.  She had all the characteristics of a beautiful Dutch colonist, including wealth, which made her highly desirable to all the single men living in the town.  Sadly, Katrina was spoiled, selfish, and shallow.  I thought it was very unfair of her to lead on Ichabod Crane into thinking she liked him, when in fact she was really in love with this big, stupid, vaguely handsome brute named Brom Bones.  In fact, I find it very low of her to play with two men's hearts just so she could have fun watching them fight over her.

Since the original tale took place in the 1790s in an old Dutch settlement, the animators decided to put everyone, including Katrina, in 18th century clothes; though to make sure we knew her heritage, they put one of those silly, white lace hats on her.  The dolls I made here show her in her signature pink dress.  I couldn't include her green parasol, and her skirt is actually shorter and poofier, but I couldn't quite re-create it with the game.  I made Katrina's hat out of pearls in the drag-and-drop section.  For her dancing gown, I had some difficulty with her pigtails because the game doesn't actually have two short braids available.  So I made do with the Princess Leia looped braids and stuck bows on them instead.  her ballgown actually is almost exactly the same as her main dress, with just some minor details (probably to make things easier on the animators at the time).  The blue dress on the right is her wedding gown, though you only see it from the back in the cartoon.  I had to get a little creative with it.  I figured it just looked like a blue version of her dancing gown or her day gown.  She ended up marrying Brom Bones, though I think they deserved each other, all things considered.

In some re-interpretations of Sleepy Hollow, they often cook up a contrived romance between Katrina and a more attractive and heroic Ichabod Crane, though it doesn't quite line up with the original story very well.  In fact, often these Crane/Katrina romances seem more like wish fulfillment on someone's part than story glorification.

I never really noticed that Katrina is just a beauty and nothing else. And besides that, she looks like Cinderella a bit, but then again Cinderella came out after Sleepy Hollow. But Cinderella is a better heroine than Katrina. I didn't like how at the end she married Brom Bones, because she shows that she'll be with whoever suits her needs and it made me see she never really liked Ichabod.
