Erte White Blood Cell

Description

I was looking forward to making this on the Erte Elegance game, & now she's finally done. White Blood Cells are the great fighters in our bodies, so I made the doll resemble a white warrior goddess, complete with a spear and a little bit of armor. Most WBC's aren't white in real life. Under a microscope they're actually pink w/ a purple nucleus that's visible. But I think ppl would have gotten really confused if I'd made this doll pink :giggle:. Her belt is supposed to be a little like her nucleus.

WBC's are the most important component of our immune systems. Every day they work hard to prevent illness, clean up common messes, and search for any new micro-alien invaders in our bodies.

The little pale yellow squiggles are meant to be antibodies, little molecules that help a lot in the immune system. They're difficult to see, even under a powerful microscope, but they usually are Y-shaped. They can usually tell if a cell or organism doesn't belong and attach themselves to it, flagging down nearby WBC's with chemicals. Sometimes the anti-bodies will do the job instead and attach themselves to, say, a small bacterium, cover it completely with themselves, and make it explode or burst.

According to this book I read, called "Blood: The River of Life," there are 3 reasons why WBC's don't eat everything in the human body, just foreign invaders.

1.) All cells within the body (except for WBC's) have smooth surfaces, whereas foreign invaders (like a bacterium or piece of dust) have rough surfaces.

2.) All living tissues in the body have a negative static charge, whereas foreign invaders have a positive static charge.

3.) All cells that belong in the human body give off chemicals saying, "yep, I live here, I'm harmless." Antibodies, which help out WBC's, can sense different chemicals and usually ignore the cells that give off the right chemical signals, and in turn, WBC's ignore native cells for that reason too.

There are actually several types of White Blood Cells, many of which are little ones that are sacrificed like tons of infantry on the battlefield, should the person get very sick from a viral infection.

I think the cell the doll above represents is the "Killer T Cell." They only appear during serious viral infections, and their sole purpose is to stop viruses from reproducing by killing cells that have been tricked into becoming virus factories.

White Blood Cells are also unique in the fact that they travel independently from other cells. They move like amoebas, crawling along blood vessel walls, and squeezing through tissues in search of foreign invaders. Sometimes a WBC will anchor itself to one area and wait for a chemical signal that there's a problem nearby.

Most WBC's in the body at any 1 time are Macrophages, or "cell-eaters." They're kind of like "house-keepers" for the body. You can find them all over the place, and they even have different names depending on what organs or tissues they inhabit. They usually eat up any bacteria, old red blood cells, dust (in the lungs), and anything else that doesn't belong in the area.

When a white blood cell eats a foreign invader, it usually sends out pseudopods (means "false feet") or if you wanta speak in Lehman's Terms, they're like tentacles. They grab the invader and absorb it like the Blob. The doll's hair and skirt are meant to look like many pseudopods spreading out everywhere.

The Immune System isn't perfect, however :/. It often overreacts to things like pollen, dust, artificial food flavoring, wheat, etc, & causes an allergic reaction. Sometimes the WBC's and antibodies mistake a bodily tissue for a foreign invader and constantly attack it, causing an Autoimmune Disorder, like Rheumatoid Arthritis, or Lupus, or Crohn's Disease.

Certain viruses also find sneaky ways into the body, tricking WBC's & antibodies into ignoring it until serious damage is done to the human body. Certain cancers are sneaky too, tricking the body into thinking it belongs there.

I could go into a discussion about AIDS, but that's another subject entirely. Let's just say that I had lots of fun reading about the Immune System :).
