Everyone thinks the kidneys are just there to create urine. They're actually an EXTREMELY complicated pair of organs and do one of the most important jobs in the human body--filtering blood.

I wasn't really sure how to show them as a fashion on the Erte Elegance game. I think I was trying to make them look a little like wings, though their shape doesn't really make you think of wings. I made the kidneys using roses, & the blood vessels are made out of beads. The doll's dress is supposed to resemble the Renal System's blood vessels, which bring in blood to the kidneys at a slightly higher pressure than other organs, since the kidneys are one of the very first stops after the heart.

The inside of the kidneys are extremely complicated, though you wouldn't know it unless you looked at tissue samples from under a microscope.

I'm not sure why, but I read that kidney stones (usually made of calcium) are more commonly found in people living in hot, dry, desert climates; like Africa & the Middle East.

Kidneys are also interesting b/c your average adult can actually live with just one functioning kidney, hence why it's usually pretty safe to donate one. You could also do well with one healthy kidney, and half of the other one. The very first successful organ transplant involved a man donating one of his kidneys to his dying brother over 50 yrs ago

The yellow shapes on top of the kidneys in this picture are the adrenal glands. They don't actually play a part in what the kidneys do, & I'm not sure why I included them, but there they are.
